I have always wanted to visit Bora Bora, so I had high expectations. I was NOT disappointed. We were there for two full days. The first day, I rented a boat which we shared with a couple of friends, Jennifer and Marco, that we met through Cruise Critic. We stuck the the SW area of Bora Bora's magnificent lagoon. We snorkled nice patch corals, visited the rubble zone of the outer reef, played with some rays, visited a public motu, and explored by boat. The second day, we booked a tour, in advance online, with native Bora Boran, Patrick Tairua.(Patrick can be contacted at patrick.bora@mail.pf. He took us up to scenic views on the main island, views of WWII ruins, and then out by motorized outrigger to a nice patch reef for snorkling, feeding rays, feeding sharks, circling the island, visiting his private motu, and more. It was a way of getting a great taste of Bora Bora in a concentrated all-day dose. Patrick is very knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. If you book him, you MUST book early! Bora Bora is incredibly beautiful. The main island is more spectacular from the distance than on shore. Some of the motus are too built up with too many over-water bungalows. However, the water is exceptional, the sea life abundant, and it is very much worth visiting. If you ever get a chance of seeing Bora Bora, do it. Because Bora Bora has only one channel in and out, the US Navy found it easy to defend and used it as a replenishment harbor for ships traversing between California and Austrailia during World War II. Too bad we gave it back to the French!
