Windows 2000, XP Home, and XP Professional Service Configurations

Read this carefully and completely before doing anything:

  • Do NOT use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box instead!
  • If you are unsure about disabling services, you can check out what each service does first by reading under the description column of services.msc.... or simply use this chart as shown in the CVC column for school use or SAFE column for home use (since I do not know what anyone does on a home computer.)
  • Service settings are global, meaning changes apply to all users.
  • All of these services are "Standard" with Windows XP. Not all services are available for Windows 2000. If you discover something other than these services which are listed in the chart that follows, another program installed them. Thus leave the setting as is.  If a service is not listed on your computer, don’t worry about it. It simply was not installed or in not available on your computer.
  • Still want more performance on your computer? Put your setting to "manual” allows Windows 2000/XP to start the service when it needs to (or when ever it feels like it), but not at boot up. However, depending on your configuration, not all services will start when required while in "Manual" mode. If you find you absolutely need a service, place it in Automatic.
  • After adjusting your service settings, reboot your computer. The setting changes will not take place until after the reboot.
  • If you do not have some of these services listed, do not panic! They simply were not “pre-installed". During the initial installation, we might have chosen not to have certain services installed for you. This is, in most cases, a fact with OEM versions of Windows XP Home, with DELL/COMPAC/HP computers, etc.
  • Disabling all of the "unneeded services" can free up to 100MB of RAM, depending on the system.
  • To change the settings of a service, highlight the service with your mouse; right click; select properties. In the properties box, you can change the startup type and stop or start a service.
  • Do you mean that out of 89 services, 36 are set to Automatic as DEFAULT, but, we MAY only need 8 or less running?!? YES, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN..

Table Header Information:

  • Display Name ~ is how it displays in the Services Control Panel.
  • Service Name ~ is what the service's "short" name is and what displays in the registry.
  • Process Name ~ name of the Process running in the background (displays in Task Manager by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del).
  • Dependencies ~ describe what other services this service needs to run.
  • DEFAULT Home ~ what Bill G. thinks should be running on Windows XP Home.
  • DEFAULT Pro ~ what Bill G. thinks should be running on Windows XP Professional.
  • "SAFE" Configuration ~ this is the configuration that 95% of the people will be able to use with little or no side effects. It will also minimizes the amount of "errors" that is reported in the Event Viewer. This does NOT guarantee it will work for you, but if fooling with services scares you, this configuration would be a good starting point.
  • CVC ~ This is the setup we use at CVC (except for servers)  This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet, provides file and print sharing resources and use of high multimedia programs. Computers can connect with our servers.
  • Gaming Configuration ~ this is the power user setup. This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet, provides file and print sharing resources and gaming or use of high multimedia programs. Some things MAY not function with this setup. No passwords save. Its use is not for a computer with analog modems or some direct DSL/cable connections.
  • Super Tweak Configuration ~ this is the Super Geek setup. This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet with a static IP address -- such as what we use on the CVC LAN. This system does not provide file and print sharing resources, nor have the ability to print. Its use is not for a computer with analog modems or many direct DSL/cable connections. You can use this configuration for extreme tweaking and testing purposes. Many things MAY not function with this setup. No passwords save. The Event Log may display "errors" of not being able to start certain services. CDRW functions may no longer work. Please do not ask, "How do I fix" questions while using this configuration. The answer will be "Use SAFE." This information's intention is for reference only.

Configuration Information:

  • Automatic ~ With a service in this state, it will start at boot time. Some services, when no longer required, will also automatically stop when not needed. However, this is very rare. If you find you do not need a service, place it into Manual or Disabled.
  • Manual ~ Manual mode allows Windows to start a service when needed. However, very few services will start up when required in Manual mode. If you find you need a service, place it into Automatic.
  • Disabled ~ This setting will stop a service from starting, even if needed. Errors in the Event Viewer will show up complaining of that fact. Some services, while Disabled, will constantly complain. However, this situation is taken care of if placed in Manual. The service descriptions identifies those that should be in Manual vs Disabled.

Exceptions to configuration data below:

  • If a computer will be involved in peer to peer sharing or acting as a server ~ In the CVC column, change  the Computer Browser service to automatic and change the server service to automatic.
  • This is a complete list of services found on CVC computers. If you do not have a service listed below, ignore it.
  • If a service is labeled “Not available” or “Not Installed” but you find it running on your computer, DISABLE it!!
  • These computers are running AVG7. The services beginning with “AVG” are associated with them.
  • The “gcasDTServ.exe” is associated with Microsoft Antispyware Beta1 program. It is loaded at startup and is not usually seen in services.msc .. but is seen in the Windows Task manager Processes tab!
  • I have not done a thorough test yet on “RunAs Service” to see whether normal CVC processes are effected.. so for now, I have it running.
  • You may have services running that are not shown here because of special software that you have installed on your computer. However, some viruses and Trojans also run special services that prevent them from being removed.. so if you run into a service not listed here. Check it out. Do not be too  anxious to remove it in case it is associated with a program you are using.. but do your homework and check it out.

Additional Tweaks

1. Remove System Restore Services!  System Restore Service creates system restore points for returning to at some future time. Each time the user installs a program or a new driver, the service creates a new point to which the user can roll back if a problem occurs. This service would have been wonderful for Windows 95 because of the tremendous number of problems that occur, but is probably not needed for the much more stable Windows XP. At CVC, we consider it an unneeded service. It is faster and less hassle to make a clean install if a problem occurs.  Get rid of System Restore Service and Indexing Service (using one of the following methods):

With the default Category Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Performance and Maintenance
  4. Select System
  5. Select System Restore Tab
  6. Check “Turn off System Restore”
  7. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

With the Classic Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select System
  4. Select System Restore Tab
  5. Check “Turn off System Restore”
  6. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

In addition the “System Restore Service” ( from services.msc )should be disabled (as you will find in the chart above).

2. Remove Automatic Updates:

Automatic Updates causes many problems and likes to turn itself on. In addition to Automatic updates service being disabled in services.msc, you should also do the following (using one of the following methods):

With the default Category Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Performance and Maintenance
  4. Select System
  5. Select Automatic Updates Tab
  6. Check “Turn off automatic updating”
  7. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

With the Classic Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select System
  4. Select Select Automatic Updates Tab
  5. Check “Turn off automatic updating”
  6. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

Remember, that it is very important to update your computer, so you MUST remember to manually go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all critical updates at least once per week.

3. Remove Remote Assistancep; and Remote Desktop Sharing

For Windows XP PROFESSIONAL ONLY

NOTE: Remote desktop sharing is NOT available with Windows XP home or Windows 2000, so you only have to remove it from Windows XP Pro. Remove it using one of the following methods:

With the default Category Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Performance and Maintenance
  4. Select System
  5. Select Remote Tab
  6. Uncheck both “Remote Assistance and Desktop Sharing” options
  7. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

With the Classic Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select System
  4. Select  Remote Tab
  5. Check Uncheck both “Remote Assistance and Desktop Sharing” options
  6. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

4. Adjust Visual Effects to “best performance”

for Windows XP HOME and XP PRO only.

Also make sure that Themes is disabled in systems.msc as shown in chart above. Themes can take up 4-12 MB or RAM.

With the default Category Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Performance and Maintenance
  4. Select System
  5. Select Advanced Tab
  6. Under performance, select Settings button
  7. Select Visual Effects Tab
  8. Select “Adjust for Best Performance”
  9. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

With the Classic Control Panel:

  1. Head to START
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select System
  4. Select Advanced Tab
  5. Under performance, select Settings button
  6. Select Visual Effects Tab
  7. Select “Adjust for Best Performance”
  8. Select the OK button to apply the settings.

  1. Remove any Picture from your desktop

For all Windows operating systems

BMP images take up 1.2 – 3 MB per image and can take up even more in larger high resolution screen.

  1. Right click on desk top
  2. Left-click on Properties
  3. Click on Background Tab
  4. Select None
  5. Click apply and OK

6. Modify mischievous INF files.

First make sure you can see hidden files such as INF files (Follow procedure in #6 above)

    1. Open Windows Explorer (Keystroke: Windows-E)
    2. Go to C:\Windows\INF folder (for Windows XP Home and Professional) or C:|WINNT\INF (for Windows NT and 2000)
    3. Edit the file called sysoc.inf
    4. Remove the reference of “hide” in this line:

Msmsgs=msgrocm.dll, OcEntry, msmsgs.inf,hide,7

To make it:

Msmsgs=msgrocm.dll, OcEntry, msmsgs.inf,7

    1. You may also remove all references to “hide” in all of the other lines as long as you KEEP the commas. Some components you can not “uncheck” in the add/remove programs GUI. If you do not get them to uninstall.

7. Remove Unwanted Windows Components

Go to “Add Remove Programs” and get reid of useless Windows Components, such as MSN EXPLORER.

In order to remove unwanted services, make sure that your you can view “hidden files”.

1. Open Windows Explorer (Keystroke: Windows-E)

2.  Click TOOLS

3. Click Folder Options

4. Click VIEW tab

5. Make sure radio button “Show hidden files and folders” is selected.

6. Make sure check box is UNCHECKED that says “hide file extensions of known file types

8. Recheck your services

Some services like to go back to the default settings when you make other changes. Go back to services.msc and recheck that all services that you disabled or changed to manual are still at those settings.

9. Use msconfig (or better: REGCLEANER) to get rid of any annoying startup programs that may be hiding from you.

To use msconfig, type Start—Run—Type “msconfig” (without typing quotes). Select OK and Enter.

To use Regcleaner, click on Regcleaner icon on screen and select the startup tab to remove unwanted starting programs.

10. Run Defrag

It is best to run scan disk first which can be scheduled at next bootup.

Defrag atleast once a month and before and AFTER installing any new program.

11. Run bootvis

You will need the following services with at least manual  setting to run bootvis:

COM+Event System

Event log

Plug and Play

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Task Scheduler

Windows Management Instrumentation
