Directions: From Casa la Vista del Delfin in Uaymitun (km16), procede east for 17 km (about 33 km east of Progreso) and you will see a road heading south with a sign to XCAMBO. Drive past the old salt fields, past wetlands where you may see flamingos and crocs. When you have driven 2 km, the road will begin to bend to the left. Shortly after that, turn to the right on the short road (.75 km to the end) that will take you to the Xcambo ruins. Go to the end and park.
Xcambo is also known as X-Tampu which means "Place of crabs or crocodiles." I have seen a crocadile on the side of the road going between the coast and Xcambo. It is also a good ride for seing flamingos and other aquatic birds. You can see some old salt pans where salt was once harvested as you drive the 2 km stretch from the beach road.
Though small in size, Xcambo is large in historic importance. The oldest occupation of Xcambo dates back to 150 BC - 300 AC. Xcambo was an important city that provided salt to the Mayan cities of Izamal, Oxkintok and Ah Kim Pech. This was an important coastal trading post where Myan artisans exchanged goods. Trade took place between Xcambo and the Mayan cities in Campeche, Tabasco, Guatemala and Belize.
The admission here is free... great price. I have been in the summer when there is a breeze and no mosquitoes. It was pleasant. However, if there is no breeze or one coming from the south, weat insect repellant.. or pick another day! No restrictions on climbing. This is a great place to take kids.
Xcambo is an eclectic combination of Mayan ruins, a Catholic chapel and a small freshwater spring with fish. Often, when I visit here, there is no one else visiting.
